Jack van Wijk is professor emeritus of Visualization at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven, University of Technology (TU/e) on October 1, 2001. Jack van Wijk (1959) received an MSc degree (1982) in Industrial Design Engineering and a PhD degree (1986) from Delft University of Technology, both with honors. He worked for the software company BSO for about a year, and next at the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) from 1988 to 1998.
He joined Eindhoven University of Technology in 1998 as an associate professor, where he was appointed as a full professor in 2001. He was vice-dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (2009-2012), scientific director of the Professional Doctorate in Engineering program on Data Science (2016-2021) and scientific director of the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e, 2018-2021).
He is a leading researcher in data visualization, with a focus on information visualization and visual analytics. He has (co-)authored about 180 scientific papers. Van Wijk and his students have received many awards, including six best paper awards, three Test of Time paper awards, the IEEE Visualization Technical Achievement Award in 2007, the Eurographics 2013 Outstanding Technical Contributions Award, and the IEEE VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. His research has led to multiple start-ups, including MagnaView BV and SynerScope BV. In 2023, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands.
