Prof.dr.ir. J.J. (Jack) van Wijk (1959 - )

Jack van Wijk is professor emeritus of Visualization at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven, University of Technology (TU/e) on October 1, 2001. Jack van Wijk (1959) received an MSc degree (1982) in Industrial Design Engineering and a PhD degree (1986) from Delft University of Technology, both with honors. He worked for the software company BSO for about a year, and next at the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) from 1988 to 1998.

He joined Eindhoven University of Technology in 1998 as an associate professor, where he was appointed as a full professor in 2001. He was vice-dean of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (2009-2012), scientific director of the Professional Doctorate in Engineering program on Data Science (2016-2021) and scientific director of the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e, 2018-2021).

He is a leading researcher in data visualization, with a focus on information visualization and visual analytics. He has (co-)authored about 180 scientific papers. Van Wijk and his students have received many awards, including six best paper awards, three Test of Time paper awards, the IEEE Visualization Technical Achievement Award in 2007, the Eurographics 2013 Outstanding Technical Contributions Award, and the IEEE VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. His research has led to multiple start-ups, including MagnaView BV and SynerScope BV. In 2023, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands.

Prof.dr.ir. J.H. (Jan) Blom (1943 -)

Jan H. Blom received the M.Sc. degree in electrical power engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology in 1966. He worked as research associate in the field of Magnetohydrodynamical power generation from 1966 to 1973 at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1973. From 1973 to 1974 he was visiting professor at Stanford University in California, USA.

From 1974 to 1981 he worked as associate professor at Eindhoven University of Technology as project manager of the “MHD blow-down experiment”. In 1981 he joined KEMA NV, first as manager of the Electro technical Research department (1981-1984), then as deputy manager and manager of the R&D Division.

In 1988 he was appointed as managing director of KEMA. He was chairman of the Board of Subsidiaries of KEMA in the USA, Russia and China. In 1998 he left KEMA and joined KPMG as senior consultant “Knowledge management”.

From January 2000 to 2008 he served as full professor in “Electrical Power systems” in the Electrical Engineering Department of Eindhoven University of Technology. From 2002 to 2006 he served as Dean of the same department.

From 2009 to 2011 he worked as manager of CC Benelux of KIC InnoEnergy. Currently he is consultant in the field of energy technology, and CEO of Keyknowledge.

Jan Blom served as member and chairman of numerous committees in the field of energy technology. He was chairman of the “Research Specific Committee” (Corech) of UNIPEDE, chairman of the “Task Force Research” of Eurelectric, member of the Research Advisory Council of EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute, Palo Alto, USA) and member of the board of ECN (Energy Research Foundation). He was member of the “Academy of Technology and Innovation”,

In 1980 he received the Siemens Award for outstanding achievement in the field of energy research.

In 2009 he received the “Hidde Nijland penning”.

J. Paredaens (°1947) is hoogleraar geweest aan de Universiteit Antwerpen (België), aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (Nederland) en aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (België).

Hij is ook Decaan geweest van de Faculteit Wetenschappen en de Faculteit Ontwerpwetenschappen, beide aan de Universiteit Antwerpen.

Zijn onderzoeksdomein was informatica, programmeertalen en databanken. Hij publiceerde hierover enkele boeken. De volledige lijst van zijn internationale publicaties bevat meer dan 130 gerefereerde artikels en kan men vinden op https://dblp.uni-trier.de/search?q=paredaens .

Sinds enkele jaren produceert hij abstracte video's. Ze worden gegenereerd met de software van Processing en Box2D .

De meeste van zijn video's zijn ongeveer 1 minuut lang en zijn abstracte werken met een wetenschappelijke en/of wiskundige inslag.

Concreet tonen deze video's een interactie tussen kleuren, geluid en beweging die de kijker een onverwachte en fascinerende ervaring geven.

Prof.dr.ir. J.J.N. (Jos) Lichtenberg (1951 - )

Prof. dr. ir. Jos J.N. Lichtenberg, behaalde in 1970 zijn HBS diploma in Maastricht (St.- Maartenscollege) en studeerde vervolgens aan de TU/e (TH) in Eindhoven. Hij behaalde in 1976 de ir titel. Hij werkte aansluitend voor Rockwool en later DSM in R&D functies. Vanaf 1984 werd hij zelfstandig R&D consultant. Vanaf 1996 deed hij onderzoek aan de TU Delft, hetgeen in 2002 heeft geleid tot een promotie op basis van het proefschrift: ‘Succes- en Faalfactoren bij Bouwproductontwikkeling’. In 2003, is hij benoemd tot hoogleraar aan de TU Eindhoven (Faculteit bouwkunde, leerstoel ‘Productontwikkeling’). Sinds zijn emeritaat in 2016, is hij tot op heden actief als aanjager van innovatie in de bouwsector, met name vanuit het Living Lab 040 (directeur LL040 BV).

Prof.dr.ir. H.W. (Harry) Lintsen (1949-2025)

Harry Lintsen was een sleutelfiguur in de ontwikkeling van de techniekgeschiedenis in Nederland en medeoprichter van de Stichting Historie der Techniek (SHT) . Hij studeerde natuurkunde aan de TU Eindhoven en promoveerde op het ingenieursberoep in de 19e eeuw, wat leidde tot het invloedrijke boek Ingenieurs in Nederland in de 19e eeuw.

Vanaf het begin van zijn carrière zette hij zich in voor de institutionele opbouw van het vakgebied techniekgeschiedenis. In 1988 richtte hij de SHT op, die uitgroeide tot het nationale platform voor techniekgeschiedenis. Als hoogleraar aan de TU Eindhoven en TU Delft gaf hij leiding aan grote onderzoeksprogramma’s zoals TIN 19 en TIN 20, over de rol van techniek in de Nederlandse samenleving.

Zijn werk kenmerkte zich door kritische reflectie op technologie en de verantwoordelijkheid van ingenieurs. Thema’s als duurzaamheid en brede welvaart kregen steeds meer aandacht, met als voorbeeld zijn boek De kwetsbare welvaart van Nederland (2018). Sinds 2021 werkte hij mee aan het project De Diepe Transitie van Nederland.

Kort voor zijn overlijden was hij betrokken bij een boek over de geschiedenis van Brainport. Hij ontving diverse onderscheidingen, waaronder het Officierschap in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau , de Erepenning van de TU/e , en het erelidmaatschap van KIVI . Hij was ook lid van de KNAW .

Harry Lintsen wordt herinnerd als een inspirator, verbinder en vernieuwer, wiens nalatenschap voortleeft in publicaties, projecten en mensen die hij heeft geïnspireerd.

Jan Hensen is professor emeritus of building performance in the Building Physics & Services unit of the TU/e Department of the Built Environment. He is also full professor of environmental engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Czech Technical University, Prague. He is the current chairman of WOI (Stichting ter Bevordering van Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs en Onderzoek Installatietechniek), co-editor-in-chief of the Journal for Building Performance Simulation, as well as reviewer and/or editorial board member of other peer reviewed scientific journals and expert evaluator of national and international research projects.

He is proud to be a Fellow of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA), Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Fellow of the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning Associations (REHVA) and of having received several other national and international scientific and practice awards.

Prof.dr. R.M.M. (Bob) Mattheij (1947 - )

Bob Mattheij (1947) studeerde wiskunde aan de Rijks Universiteit Utrecht, waar hij in 1971 doctoraalexamen Toegepaste Wiskunde deed. In 1977 promoveerde hij bij Van der Sluis op een onderwerp uit de numerieke wiskunde. In dat zelfde jaar werd hij wetenschappelijk medewerker werd bij de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen. Inmiddels Universitair Hoofd Docent geworden, verruilde hij deze universiteit voor de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in 1987. In 1989 werd hij aldaar benoemd tot hoogleraar Numerieke Wiskunde, een leerstoel die later omgedoopt werd in Scientific Computing. Zijn onderzoeksinteresse betrof een breed scala van onderwerpen in dit vakgebied, met name (randwaarde problemen van) differentiaalvergelijkingen, differentiaal-algebraïsche vergelijkingen, viskeuze stromen en randwaarde elementen methoden. Daarnaast had hij een grote interesse in toepassingen van de wiskunde op velerlei terrein. Veel van het onderzoek is uitgevoerd samen met promovendi, wat geresulteerd heeft in 54 promoties, ongeveer 230 publicaties en een aantal boeken. Hij is betrokken geweest bij allerlei activiteiten op het gebied van industriële wiskunde, zoals het (mede) oprichten van ITW (Stichting Industriële en Toegepaste Wiskunde), ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry) Verder was hij (mede)organisator van een reeks Europese projecten op dit terrein, vaak als coördinator. Tussen 2000 en 2010 heeft hij zich sterk gemaakt om via samenwerking met buitenlandse universiteiten master studenten naar Eindhoven te krijgen. De door hem ontworpen masteropleiding CSE (Computational Science and Engineering) was een succesvol resultaat van. Binnen de universiteit is hij daarnaast jarenlang actief geweest bij wiskundige advisering, wat onder meer geleid heeft tot het oprichten van LIME (Laboratory for Industrial Mathematics Eindhoven), een aparte afdeling binnen de faculteit Wiskunde en Informatica die problemen voor het bedrijfsleven hielp oplossen. In september 2011 nam hij afscheid van de TU/e, ongeveer tegelijkertijd met de verzelfstandiging van LIME tot een BV in samenwerking met Sioux. Bij zijn afscheid werd hij benoemd tot officier in de orde van Oranje Nassau. Na zijn emeritaat werd zijn directeurschap van LIME BV zijn nieuwe hoofdtaak. In 2018 nam hij afscheid van Sioux-LIME

Prof.dr. P.M.E. (Paul) De Bra (1959 - )

Paul De Bra studied Mathematics (with a focus on Computer Science) at the University of Antwerp and graduated in 1981. He also obtained a teaching degree in 1981, and in 1987 a PhD in (Computer) Science, also in Antwerp. His research field was Databases, with a thesis on Horizontal Decompositions in the Relational Database Model.

For most of 1988 and 1989 he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, in the Information Systems Principles department.

After that he became first associate and later (1996) full professor at the TU/e, in the field of Databases. He is best known for his research on personalization in web-based systems and on technology-enhanced learning.

He published around 200 scientific papers and 3 books. For many years he was board member (and for 8 years also president) of User Modeling Inc., a non-profit organization for User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization.

Since his retirement Paul De Bra has turned his attention to music, and in particular to the accordion. For about 30 years he was conductor of the accordion ensemble Avanti in Antwerp (until 2014). He makes many arrangements for accordion ensembles, which are freely available and played all over the world. Henk Corporaal is Professor in Embedded System Architectures at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in The Netherlands. He has gained a BSc and MSc in Theoretical Physics from the University of Groningen, and a PhD (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering, in the area of Computer Architecture, from Delft University of Technology.

His research is on low power multi-processor, heterogenous processing architectures, their programmability, and the predictable design of soft- and hard real-time systems. This includes research and design of embedded system architectures, like CGRAs, SIMD, VLIW and GPUs, on accelerators, the exploitation of all kinds of parallelism, fault-tolerance, approximate computing, energy-efficient architectures for machine and deep learning, optimizations and mapping of deep learning networks, and the (semi-)automated mapping of applications to these architectures.

Corporaal has co-authored over 600 journal and conference papers. He supervised more than 50 PhD and 200 Master thesis students at KULeuven, TUDelft and TUEindhoven. Furthermore, he invented a new class of VLIW architectures, the Transport Triggered Architectures, which is used in several commercial products, and by many research groups. He participated in more than 50 projects. Among them he initiated and led the Dutch NWO perspectief program on Efficient Deep Learning (efficientdeeplearning.nl); in this program many research institutes and over 30 companies participated. He also is the PI of the EU project CONVOLVE (convolve.eu) on seamless design of smart edge processors, with 19 partners. Van 2001 tot 2024 hoogleraar Installatietechnologie aan de Faculteit Bouwkunde TU/e. Mijn onderzoek ging over het integraal ontwerpen voor klimatisering en ventilatie in gebouwen. Specifiek gezonde ventilatie in kinderdagverblijven & scholen, intelligente gebouwen en flexibele smart grid integratie van duurzame energie.

Bestuurslid en voorzitter geweest van de afdeling Elektrotechniek van de TVVL (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Installatietechniek in de Gebouwde Omgeving). Lid van de raad van begeleiding van ISSO (Nederlandse vereniging voor het stimuleren van onderzoek naar installatietechniek in Nederland). De B.J. Max-prijs in 1993 ontvangen en in 2009 de lifetime achievement award. In 2014 de REHVA Professional Science Award van de European Federation for Heating-, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning ontvangen.

Alexander Maria Christiaan Lemmens, born in 1955 in Heerlen, received a MSc degree in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. degree at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

From 1987 to 1992 he worked at the University of Zambia as manager of the Technology Development and Advisory Unit (TDAU). In 1992 he started to teach Technology Assessment at TU/e. From 1996 to 2011 he was director of the Eindhoven Energy Institute and later involved in the KIC InnoEnergy. In the period 2002 to 2011 he was educational director for several BSc and MSc programs in different departments. In June 2011 he was appointed dean of the TU/e Bachelor College. In 2013 he was appointed full professor holding a chair on Academic Science and Engineering Education.

He retired from TU/e in july 2021.

P.J. (Piet) Lemstra (Godlinze (Groningen), 26 oktober 1946), bijnaam PLEM, is een Nederlands hoogleraar scheikunde.

Prof. dr. Lemstra promoveerde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in 1975. Vervolgens was hij post-doctoraal fellow aan de Universiteit van Bristol (UK) onder professor Andrew Keller. Van 1976 tot 1985 werkte hij bij DSM Research waar hij samen met Paul Smith de supersterke vezel Dyneema heeft ontwikkeld.

In 1985 werd Lemstra hoogleraar aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Van 1990 tot 1995 was hij voor de eerste maal decaan van de faculteit Scheikundige Technologie. Van 1994-1997 was Lemstra directeur van de onderzoeksschool Polymeren (PTN) en in 1997 richtte hij samen met professor het (DPI) op, waar hij tot 2004 werkte als wetenschappelijk directeur.

In 2004 richtte hij met de op ten behoeve van de samenwerking met het MKB. In februari 2008 werd Lemstra (tot en met maart 2011) wederom decaan. Op 30 september 2011 hield hij -na ruim een kwart eeuw aan de TU/e-zijn afscheidscollege. Daarna ging hij aan de slag in China.

In 1980 I received my MSc degree in electrical engineering (TU-Delft) and in 1992 my PhD degree in computer science (TU-Eindhoven). Most of my R&D work has been in industry: at Philips Research for 26 years, and later at NXP Research, ST-Ericsson, and Ericsson. From 1996 to 2023 I have been a part-time full professor in M&CS, specialized in parallel programming.

Na zijn technische opleiding bij Philips was Piet enige jaren werkzaam als instrumentmaker bij het toenmalige Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium in Eindhoven. In het najaar 1964 trad hij in dienst bij de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven als technisch assistent onderwijs en onderzoek bij de faculteit Werktuigbouwkunde, vakgroep Productietechnologie. In 1968 verplaatste hij zijn werkzaamheden binnen de vakgroep naar de sectie Geometrische Meettechnieken, onder leiding van prof. drs. J. Koning.

In 1972 startte hij parttime de opleiding Technische Natuurkunde die hij begin 1978 met het predikaat ‘met lof’ afsloot. Na enige jaren als Universitair docent onderwijs- en onderzoekstaken te hebben uitgevoerd bij genoemde sectie werd besloten het onderzoek te richten op een promotie die in 1986 succesvol werd afgesloten met een proefschrift getiteld ‘Absolute meetnauwkeurigheid van technische laserinterferometers’.

Na het afscheid van prof. Koning in 1983 werd hij hoofd van de sectie Geometrische Meettechnieken onder de leerstoel ‘Verspaningstechnologie’ van prof. Van der Wolf. Als Universitair hoofddocent leidde hij de sectie vanaf 1986 en begeleidde hij diverse afstudeerprojecten en enige promotieprojecten. Daarnaast was hij 12 jaar parttime docent bij de Hogeschool Eindhoven. Einde 1990 kreeg hij van de faculteit Werktuigbouwkunde de aanbieding de nieuwe leerstoel ‘Precision Engineering’ op te zetten. Per 1 mei 1991 werd hij benoemd als voltijd hoogleraar.

Piet begeleidde ongeveer 150 eigen afstudeerprojecten, 20 mechatronisch-ontwerpersprojecten en voltooide 17 eigen promotieprojecten. Daarnaast was hij auteur of medeauteur van vele tientallen publicaties, adviseur van enige bedrijven en van het ministerie van EZ en bestuurslid van diverse nationale en internationale commissies gerelateerd aan het vakgebied Precision Engineering.

In 2004 stopte Piet met werken voor de TU/e. Hij bleef daarna nog enige tijd als adviseur en commissaris verbonden aan enkele bedrijven.

G.W. Matthias Rauterberg received a B.S. in Psychology (1978) at the University of Marburg (Germany), a B.A. in Philosophy (1981) and a B.S. in Computer Science (1983), a M.S. in Psychology (1981) and a M.S. in Computer Science (1986) at the University of Hamburg (Germany), and a Ph.D. in Computer Science/ Mathematics (1995) at the University of Zurich (Switzerland).

He was a adjunct professor for ‘usability engineering’ in computer science and industrial engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, where later he was heading the Man-Machine Interaction research group (MMI). Since 1998 he is fulltime professor for ‘Human Communication Technology’ first at IPO, Center for User System Interaction Research, and later at the Department of Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands). From 1999 till 2001 he was director of IPO. From 2006 till 2016 he was the head of the Designed Intelligence research group at the department of Industrial Design of the TU/e.
He was the Swiss representative in the IFIP TC13 on ‘Human Computer Interaction’ (1994-2002) and the chairman of the IFIP WG13.1 on ‘HCI and Education’ (1998-2004). He is now the Dutch representative in the IFIP TC14 on ‘Entertainment Computing’ and was the founding vice-chair of this TC14 (since 2006). He was elected as IFIP TC14 chair for the term 2013-2017. He was also the chair of the IFIP WG14.3 on ‘Entertainment Theory’ (2004-2012). He was appointed as visiting professor at Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) (2004-2007). He was guest professor of School of Design at Jiangnan University, Wuxi, China (2012-2015), at East China University of Sciene and Technology, Shanghai, China (2013-2016), and at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China (2020). He received the German GI-HCI Award for the best Ph.D. in 1997 and the Swiss Technology Award for the BUILD-IT system in 1998. In 2007 he got the Silver Core Award from IFIP, and since 2020 he is elected Fellow of IFIP.

In 2004 he was nominated as a member of the ‘Cream of Science’ in the Netherlands (the 200 top-level Dutch researchers) and amongst the 10 top-level TU/e scientists. He has over 500 publications in international journals, conference proceedings, books, etc. He acts also as editor and member of the editorial board of several leading international journals. He is co-editor-in-chief of the international journal "Entertainment Computing" (Elsevier). Since 2021 he is retired and professor emeritus at TU/e.

Hans Niemantsverdriet (Amsterdam 1951) studied Experimental Physics at the Free University (1978) and obtained his PhD in Technical Sciences from the Delft University of Technology (1983). In 1984 he received a ZWO Huygensfellowship, for spending 5 years at TU/e in the Laboratory Prof Roel Prins (Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry), with stays abroad at the University of München and the Fritz-Haber Institute, Berlin.

In 1989, Hans was appointed Associate Professor at TU/e, and Full Professor in 1999. Assisted by NWO-Pionier and NWO-Groot grants, he built up an extensive surface science laboratory and formed a research group on the theme Physical Chemistry of Surfaces in Catalysis. He supervised 27 PhD students as First Promotor, and 5 as co-promotor.

From 2001 - 2007, Hans served as Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, as the successor of Prof Ruud Metselaar. In this capacity he also represented TU/e in international committees such as CLUSTER and CESAER, and the EuroTech Group. In 2012 Hans became Dean of the TU/e Graduate School, with the task to design a plan for this new organization. When ready (end of 2014) Hans partly retired and resumed his passion, namely fundamental research in catalysis and surface science.

Hans did sabbaticals at Purdue University, Berkeley, and DTU, was visiting professor in several universities in the world (Helsinki University of Technology, UDCT Mumbai, EPFL Lausanne, METU Ankara, Tianjin University) and scientific advisor in Singapore, Japan, Finland, Turkey and South Africa. From 1996-2016, Hans served as Associated and Full Editor of the Journal of Catalysis, by then the flagship journal of the field. Hans published about 330 scientific articles, and two books, Spectroscopy in Catalysis (Wiley 1993) and Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics (together with Ib Chorkendorff; Wiley 2003), which both became worldwide adapted texts for education in catalysis. At present, Hans is Honorary Professor at Cardiff University (2013), Jiangsu University (2016) and the University of Cape Town (2018), while Aalto University (the former Helsinki University of Technology) appointed him Doctor Honoris Causa in October 2014.

Since 2013, Hans established his own research company, Syngaschem BV, which was formed with financial support from Synfuels China Technology Co., Ltd. Together with its Director, Prof Yongwang Li, Hans planned and built the Research Institute SynCat@Beijing in Beijing-Huairou, and a partner laboratory SynCat@DIFFER in Eindhoven. The two laboratories focus on fundamental surface studies, photocatalysis (Beijing) and electrocatalysis (Eindhoven). Associated with the SynCat Labs is the SynCat Ac@demy, offering courses in catalysis, surface science, and scientific leadership development. Hans serves as scientific director of the SynCat organisation, until the end of 2023.

Persoonlijke aandachtsgebieden binnen de leerstoel bouwfysica:

Warmte- en vochttransport in gebouwconstructies en installaties, luchtstromingen in en rond (wind) gebouwen. De toepassing van deze kennis betreft het thermisch comfort, duurzaamheid en het energiegebruik voor verwarmen en koelen van gebouwen. Hierbij is steeds een nauwe samenwerking met de bouwkundige en installatietechnische ontwerpers gezocht. De ontwikkeling van software om in een vroeg stadium de consequenties van ontwerpkeuzes te voorspellen stond hierbij centraal.

Prof.dr. C.J.H. (Cees) Midden

Cees Midden received a degree in Psychology from the University of Leiden in 1976. From 1978 till 1987 he worked as a senior researcher at the National Laboratories for Energy research in the Netherlands specializing in the perception of energy risks. In 1987 he became Associate Professor at the Psychology Department of Leiden University. In 1991 he was appointed professor at Eindhoven University, specializing in the interaction between humans and technological systems. From 1993 until 2013 he chaired the group Human Technology Interaction at TU/e. He served as dean of the department in 1994-1995. In addition, he served three periods as vice-dean. From 1993-1999 he served as the first chair of the TU/e program Technology for Sustainability. Prof Midden has been a member of various professional organizations such as the Society for Risk Analysis, the European Association of Social Psychology and the International Association of Applied Psychology.

His research focus is on the social and psychological factors of human- technology interactions. He published extensively on environmental consumer behavior, on the perception and communication of technological risks and the adoption of technological innovations. Special topics of interest have been trust in sociotechnical systems, emotional and automatic components of judgment and behavioral choice, and the development of persuasive technologies and environments.

Benoeming aan de TU/e

1971: Benoeming tot gewoon Hoogleraar in de afdeling der Bedrijfskunde bij Koninklijk Besluit (kroonbenoeming). Henk Feitsma bekleedde de Leerstoel Bedrijfskunde aan wat later de Faculteit Technische Bedrijfskunde zou gaan heten (en nog weer later "Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences"). Hij hield zich in het bijzonder bezig met de theorie en de geschiedenis van de organisatieleer. Als hoogleraar begeleidde hij aan de TU/e in totaal acht promovendi. Een andere promotie die aanvankelijk in Eindhoven gepland stond vond uiteindelijk aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen plaats waarbij Feitsma als co-promotor optrad. Henk Feitsma publiceerde diverse artikelen.

Nevenactiviteiten

Naast zijn hoogleraarschap was Henk Feitsma (oud Elfsteden wedstrijdrijder) mede oprichter van de Eindhovense studentenschaatsvereniging ISIS. Hij trainde een aantal jaren het studententeam en onder zijn leiding werden diverse successen bij de studentenschaatskampioenschappen geboekt.

Hoek, W. (Wim) van der (1924 – 2019)

Wim van der Hoek, geboren 28 september 1924, is in 1943 afgestudeerd aan het Leids Gymnasium. Hij behaalde in 1950 het diploma werktuigkundig ingenieur aan de THD (met lof). Hij was van augustus 1949 tot september 1984 werkzaam bij Philips in Eindhoven. Van 1 januari 1961 tot 1 oktober 1985 was hij buitengewoon hoogleraar aan de THE. Het motto van de groep was: “Construeren als confrontatie tussen Critiek en Creatie”. Alle ervaring en ‘leergeld’ is opgeslagen in de afscheidsrede “Leren construeren? – Vallen en Opstaan!’ ten behoeve van opvolgers in Eindhoven, Twente en Delft. Deze afscheidsrede is hier te lezen.

De collegestof is verwerkt in een ‘collegedictaat’ met de titel: ‘Het voorspellen van Dynamisch Gedrag en Positioneringsnauwkeurigheid van Constructies en Mechanismen’.

Het grootste deel daarvan bestaat uit een opsomming, bespreking en doordenking van bijna alle ‘fouten’ bij het construeren gemaakt door mijzelf en door honderden collega’s en constructeurs, binnen en buiten de Philipskring. Dat deel leidde al gauw een eigen leven onder de titel: ‘Des Duivels Prentenboek’.

Dit ‘D.D.P.’ werd stapsgewijs uitgebreid tot en met de tiende druk en geniet ruime bekendheid en waardering onder de Nederlandse constructeurs.

Prof.dr. K.M. (Kees) van Hee (1946)

Kees van Hee studied Mathematics, with Physics and Economics in Leiden. In 1971 he became assistant professor of Computer Science in Leiden. At the end of 1973 he moved to TU/e where he received a PhD in 1978. The subject of his thesis was Markov decision processes with incomplete information. After his PhD he became director of AKB, a consultancy firm in Rotterdam specializing in operations research and statistics. In 1984 he was appointed professor of Computer Science, in particular the theory of information systems. He focused on methods for modeling information systems and on intelligent information systems. In 1994 he became director of Bakkenist Management Consultants.

When this firm merged with Deloitte in 1999, he became a partner of Deloitte Consultancy. In 2004 he returned fulltime to TU/e and focused on analysis methods for information systems using Petri nets. From 2005 till 2009 he was Dean of the Mathematics and Computer Science department. Since 2007 he has been director of the Stan Ackermans Institute, which provides professional doctorate programs in design and engineering.

He published over 130 papers. He was first supervisor of 15 and second supervisor of 10 PhD students. Seven of them are professors today. He supervised circa 130 master thesis projects.

Jan managed to publish about 160 international scientific publications with his respective research teams, mainly at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the last ten years also at the Open University until 1 August 2016 (both in The Netherlands). The total 50 years of his academic career approach 1000 citations of this work with his team members (impact score 22.70), among who many colleagues at the above universities plus universities in the US, (2 years), Germany (15 years), China (total half a year) and France (5 years). He is very grateful to his employer in chief the TU/e and all his colleagues across several decades of joint teaching and research. Giok-Djan Khoe was born in Magelang, Indonesia, on July 22, 1946. He received the degree of Elektrotechnisch Ingenieur, cum laude, from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1971. He started research at the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) Laboratory on Plasma Physics, Rijnhuizen. In 1973 he moved to the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven to start pioneering work in the area of optical fiber communication systems and components. In 1983 he became part time professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. He became a full professor at the same University in 1994 and served as chairman of the Department of Telecommunication Technology and Electromagnetics (TTE) until 2008. He has 41 United States Patents and has authored and co-authored more than 350 papers, including 75 invited papers and chapters in 6 books. His professional activities include many conferences, where he has served in technical, management and advisory committees as a member or chairman. Recently, he was general co-chair of the ECOC in 2008. His journal activities include involvements as associate editor for the Journal of Lightwave Technologies and the Journal of Quantum Electronics and as a member of the advisory board or as reviewer of other journals. In Europe, he was closely involved in Research Programs of the European Community and in Dutch national research programs, as participant, evaluator, auditor and program committee member. He is one of the founders of the Dutch COBRA University Research Institute and one of the three recipients of the prestigious “Top Research Institute Photonics” grant that is awarded to COBRA in 1998 by the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. In 2001 he brought 4 groups together to start a new international alliance called the European Institute on Telecommunication Technologies (eiTT). He has served in The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonic Society organisation as President (2003), European Representative in the Board of Governors, VP Finance & Administration, Board of Governors Elected Member and Member of the Executive Committee of the IEEE Benelux Section. He was the founder of the IEEE Photonic Society Benelux Chapter. He has been an IEEE Fellow since 1991 and received the MOC/GRIN award in 1997. He is an invited member of the Netherlands Academy of Engineering and Innovation (AcTI-nl) since 1999 and became a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in 2007.

On the occasion of his farewell symposium at the Technical University in 2011, Professor Khoe was appointed Officer in the Order of the Oranje-Nassau in Royal recognition of his outstanding services to science.

Per 1-5-1985 benoemd tot buitengewoon hoogleraar voor de leerstoel: "Constructieve aspecten van de automatisering" .

Aanvankelijk 1 dag per week, later uitgebreid met een tweede dag, betaald door de tweede fase opleiding van het Stan Ackermans Instituut.

In deze periode droeg ik de verantwoordelijkheid voor de colleges en practica voor de vakken Bedrijfsmechanisatie en mechanismen. Er zijn ruim 130 ingenieurs bij mij afgestudeerd en er is er één gepromoveerd op het onderwerp CAD/CAM.

Ik was een van de 80 oorspronkelijke ontwikkelaars van het Linuxsysteem.

Opleiding/achtergrond

Marinus (Rini) E.H. van Dongen (1943) deed in 1960 eindexamen HBS-b aan het Sint Joriscollege te Eindhoven en ging aansluitend technische natuurkunde studeren aan de THE en behoorde daarmee tot de eerste lichting natuurkundestudenten in Eindhoven. Hij studeerde af in 1966 in de groep Stromingsleer en bleef in dezelfde groep werkzaam. Hij promoveerde in 1978 op het proefschrift ‘Thermal Diffusion Effects in Shock Tube Boundary Layers’, met G. Vossers en D.A. de Vries als promotoren. In 1992 was hij visiting professor aan de Tohoku Universiteit, Sendai, Japan. Van 1995 tot 2001 was hij deeltijdhoogleraar in de Grondslagen van de Milieutechnologie aan de Universiteit Twente. Van 1998 tot eind 2005 was hij hoogleraar in de Experimentele Stromingsleer aan de TU/e.

Het onderzoek van Rini van Dongen is geconcentreerd geweest rond fysische toepassingen van compressibele stromingen, zoals de warmteoverdracht in hete gassen en plasma’s, de invloed van fase-overgang op compressibele stromingen en op golfvoortplanting, nucleatie en druppelgroei in multi-component mengsels gerelateerd aan condensaatscheiding en golfvoortplanting in poreuze media. Hij was ook actief betrokken bij onderzoek uitgevoerd aan de faculteiten Werktuigbouwkunde en Biomedische Technologie van de TU/e op het gebied van de biostromingsleer. Van 1999-2005 was hij voorzitter van de Gemeenschappelijke TU/e-commissie ‘Technologie voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling’.

Van 1952 tot 1956 was ik medewerker op de Statistische afdeling van het Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam. De afdeling stond onder leiding van Prof. David van Dantzig. Ik was vooral geïnteresseerd in de statistische consultatie, het terrein van Prof. Jan Hemelrijk. Zo heb ik mij verdiept in waarnemingen op velerlei gebied: kikkervisjes, walvissen, ratten en vleermuizen, maar ook scheepsschroeven en vlamstraling in hoogovens. Het laatste jaar kwam daar onderzoek bij over uitschieters (afwijkende waarnemingen).

Van 1956 tot 1967 werkte ik bij Unilever in de Centrale Organisatie Afdeling, als hoofd van de sectie Statistiek en Operations Research. Ik werkte veel samen met mijn Engelse collega M.J. (Mike) Moroney, auteur van de bestseller "Facts from Figures".

In 1966 promotie aan de UvA op het proefschrift "Slippage Tests", promotor Prof.Dr. J.Hemelrijk.
